David McKendrick

Lecturer in Social Work, Glasgow Caledonian University

Prior to becoming a lecturer at GCU’s School of Health and Life Sciences, David held a variety of posts in Glasgow and North Lanarkshire, working mainly with young people and their families.

His academic interests lie in transitions, with a specific focus on how people manage the act of moving from one place in their life to another, particularly if they are experiencing some kind of vulnerability. David’s interest in this area has developed from seeing how young people have managed moving from public care into their own accommodation, and the challenges this has presented for them. He is also interested in how we can utilise new technologies and social media to develop more effective support, particularly for vulnerable people who are experiencing transition in their lives.

David is currently completing research on the effectiveness of using social networking services in social work education (with Dr JL Westood and Ms AML Taylor). His research team is also developing a range of innovations in using social media to support students during their time at university. David is nearing completion of a web-based series of multiplatform learning objects to support learning in and transition to Higher Education (with Dr Jane McKay).
