Denise Buiten is a Senior Lecturer of Sociology and Social Justice at the University of Notre Dame Australia (Sydney) and a Senior Research Associate at the University of Johannesburg.

Dr Buiten's research specialises in gender, violence and the media. In particular, her work focuses on understandings and representations of gender-based violence, and how these are evolving.

Her recent book, Familicide, Gender and the Media: Gendering Familicide, Interrogating News (2022) examines familicide through a sociological lens and analyses the way familicide-suicides are reported in the news.
