OPTIMA SILVER MEDAL 1995. / MEDALLA DE PLATA DE OPTIMA Medalla de plata de la organización internacional (OPTIMA), correspondiente a la mejor publicación botánica del año 1994 por el libro “A taxonomic revision of the Section Sideritis (Genus Sideritis) (Labiatae)” (Compartida con la Profesora C. Obón, coautora del libro). Entregada en el Congreso Internacional de OPTIMA en Sevilla en 1995.

MINISTRY OF SCIENCE IN POLAND 2006 / MINISTERIO DE EDUCIACION Y CIENCIA EN POLONIA Premio del Minister Nauki I Szkilnictwa Wyzsego (Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia de Polonia) por el trabajo conjunto demostrando la existencia de nuevos mecanismos que regulan la formación de los vasos sanguíneos y la reacción inflamatoria, en particular por la demostración del papel de la hemo oxigenasa-1 en los mecanismos de angiogénesis, al equipo liderado por el profesor Jozef Dulak de la Universidad de Cracovia y a cada uno de los investigadores que colaboramos en los diversos trabajos, 2 de octubre de 2006.

SCHOLARSHIP
Diego Rivera Núñez, born in Albacete (Spain) the 05-08-1958, graduate in Biology in 1981, with average score 9.04 on a ten point scale. Presented his project in 1983, receiving the graduation extraordinary award in January 28 1984. Doctor in Biology by the University of Murcia, in 1985, receiving the Ph.D. extraordinary award in January 28 of 1987. Scholarship holder of the “Plan de Formación” of the University Research Personnel between 1982 and 1985 of the Spanish Ministry of Education. Postgraduate scholarship of IAESTE (Germany) and of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (France). Regular professor of University from May 15 1990, in the Department of Plant Biology of the University of Murcia, being ascribed his courses to the Faculties of Biology and Medicine. Belongs to the area of Botany.

ACTIVITIES
Has received official accreditation as University Professor of Botany on 09/09/2009. Passed the access examination to the body of University Professors at the University of Murcia on April 14, 2010. University Professor of Botany (Catedrático) from May 13, 2010. Academic-elect of the Academy of Pharmacy of Santa Maria of Spain, having delivered his inaugural address on 14 December 2010. He imparted courses for graduate and postgraduate, and doctorate in the University of Murcia, from 1982 until the present time. He was recognized in this university six educational five-year periods up to 2021. He has credited over 500 credits imparted, of which 43 are of doctorate, and the rest of graduate and postgraduate studies in the Degrees of Biology and Pharmacy. He also collaborated in the graduate degree programs and doctorate of the Foundation Ortega y Gasset, the University of Las Palmas and of the University of Alicante. He was evaluated positively in 6 research sexennial periods from 1985 up to 2020, according to the Royal Ordinance 1086/ August 1989 28.

He carried postgraduate and postdoctoral work in diverse research centres at France, United Kingdom, United States and Portugal. To highlight his work in: 1. Jardin Botanique de la Ville de Lyon with Professor Paul Berthet 2. Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle (Laboratoire de Phanerogamie) 3. Station Internationale de Phytosociologie at Bailleul (France) with Professor Jean Marie Géhu 4. Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique GEVES, with Dr. Michel Kerguelen 5. University of Reading with Dr. Stephen Jury.

He directed and co-directed 8 doctoral theses, of which 5 were presented in the University of Murcia, 2 in the University Miguel Hernandez de Elche and 1 in the University of Castilla La Mancha, all obtained the qualification of Cum Laude, and two have mention of European Doctorate, and three received further Extraordinary Ph.D. award. He is presently involved in the direction of two doctoral theses.

He carried out research in matters of Plant Taxonomy, Ethnobotany, Ethnopharmacology, and Paleoethnobotany) He was responsible in two projects financed by the European Commission, in three projects of INIA, in diverse projects financed by autonomous communities and in one project of the Ministry of Education and Universities. He has been responsible of diverse contracts with companies and public administrations. It has been “national focal point coordinator” for Spain of the MEDUSA network (coordinated by Professor V. Heywood).

PUBLICATIONS
Published his results in 1. 4 international and 27 national books, 29 international and 92 national, book chapters. 2. Over 100 papers included in ISI (some received over 200 citations), and 20 bibliographical revisions in journals included in ISI, 11 articles in international journals not included in ISI and 53 articles and notes in national journals (as Annals of the Botanical Garden of Madrid). 3. Over 100 communications to international and national congresses, of which 37 have been published. Collaborated with the Official Association of Biologists of Spain carrying out diverse reports, as well as with the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Culture of Spain, and it acted as forensic expert before the Tribunals. It has been part of the advisory group of the Project Iberian Flora and of the teams of the Spanish Inventory of Traditional Knowledge related to Biodiversity both wild species in natural habitats and domesticated species under cultivation.

OTHERS
Directed three projects of international cooperation with Aymara native communities of Bolivia. Participated in congresses addressed to educational issues concerning ethnobotany and ethnopharmacology in undergraduate and postgraduate studies, in Duke University, in X ISE congress in Sao Paulo (Brazil), and Ethnobotany Congress in Bariloche (Argentina). It has imparted and/or coordinated diverse courses and seminars, highlighting the: 1. Director of University Specialist's Course in Gardening and Landscaping (University of Murcia, Official Association of Biologists and Guild of Architects from Murcia). 15 of December of 1997 - June 21 1998. (26.2 credits). 2. Director of the Course Economic Botany. Importance of Plant Resources of SE Spain, of the International University of the Sea of the University of Murcia. 11 to 15 September 2000. (4 credits) Imparted conferences at diverse forums and societies: University of Oviedo, Summer University of Teruel, Official Association of Biologists, Official Guild of Pharmacists of the Region of Murcia, the International University of the Sea (University of Murcia), Open University of Yecla, General Academy of the Air - Ministry of Defense (Summer courses), University Complutense of Madrid, Club “Última Hora” of the Balearic Islands, Foundation Ramón Areces, Cibio, Universitat des Illes Balears, University of La Laguna, Reading University and The Linnaean Society, The space I+D+I in “Barcelona Tecnoalimentaria – Fitec”, Botanical Garden of Castilla La Mancha, Foundation Ortega y Gasset, etc. Received diverse formation courses, some within the plan of Permanent Formation of the University of Murcia. He was awarded with the Silver Medal of the international organization for taxonomy in the Mediterranean Area (OPTIMA), corresponding to the botanical best publication in the year 1994 for the book “A taxonomic revision of the Section Sideritis (Genus Sideritis) (Labiatae)” (Shared with Prof C. Obón FLS, joint author of the book) which was presented during the OPTIMA International Congress in Seville in 1995. Received the Prize of Minister Nauki I Szkilnictwa Wyzsego (Ministry of Education and Science of Poland) for the combined work demonstrating the existence of new mechanisms that regulate the formation of the blood vessels and the inflammatory reaction, in particular for the demonstration of the paper of the hemooxigenase-1 in the angiogenesis mechanisms. Being member of the team led by the professor Jozef Dulak of the University of Krakow, October 2 2006. Academic positions: • Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Biology of the University of Murcia, from June 1 1994 up to November 30 1995. • Coordinator of the University Campus of Espinardo of the University of Murcia (Vice-Rectorate of Planning and Investments, from April 16 1998 up to April 23 2002). • Coordinator of Environmental Quality, Projects and New Campuses of the University of Murcia, from April 30 2002 up to April 3 2006). President of the Organizing Committee of the XI congress of the International Society of Ethnopharmacology and of 1st Hispanic Portuguese Encounter of Ethnobiology from the 20 to 25 September 2010 in Albacete. Collaborated with diverse scientific journals as reviewer or member of the editorial committee (Journal of Ethnopharmacology, Frontiers in Pharmacology, Nordic Journal of Botany, Ethnobotany, Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden). He was secretary of the Anales de Biología, journal of Murcia University. Member of scientific societies: Linnaean Society, IAPT, IACPT, OPTIMA, SEB, ISHS, American Botanical Council, International Society of Ethnobiology, Sociedad Española de Fitoterapia.
