Professor for Conservation Biology, Axa Chair for Functional Mountain Ecology at the École Nationale Supérieure Agronomique de Toulouse, Université de Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier

The research profile of Prof. Schmeller is not only characterized by a multidisciplinary view, but also a global view on research questions. His active contributions to international initiatives and processes, such as in the Group of Earth Observation’s Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON) and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), have established him as an expert in linking local issues to global problems. For answering local to global questions in research, scalable and harmonized datasets are of importance. Here his outstanding research on Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) and biodiversity monitoring has much contributed to advance our current understanding of issues with biodiversity and has improved current data collection, processing and management under the novel topics of Big Data and data science in biodiversity research
