Eftyhia Vardas

Prof Eftyhia Vardas is a clinical virologist, who completed her undergraduate studies at the University of the Witwatersrand where she received a BSc(Hons) in Medical Physiology, MBBCh, DTM&H and DPH. Her specialist training was at the National Institutes of Communicable diseases and she obtained an FC Path in Clinical Virology from the South African College of Pathologists. Her work in clinical virology for the past 20 years, has focused on the control of important human viral infections and she has conducted Phase I, II and III clinical trials in hepatitis B, HIV vaccines and microbicides and HPV vaccines. She is an honorary extra-ordinary professor in Medical Virology in the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Stellenbosch and Head of Virology at Lancet Laboratories. She was a member of the COVID-19 Ministerial Advisory Committee (MAC) to the Minister of Health March to September 2020.
