I am interested in how magma is transported from Earth’s mantle to the surface. This will help answer what causes different types of volcanic activity and how the rocks of Earth’s crust form. I have led research expeditions to study oceanic spreading centers as well as to volcanic hotspots (Galapagos and Iceland). My group’s current research is to image the magma plumbing pathways in the crust beneath subduction zone volcanoes (Newberry, OR, and Santorini, Greece) by collecting dense geophysical measurements and by doing sophisticated inverse modeling on high performance computers.
