I am a Research Lecturer specialising in enzyme mechanisms, particularly enzymes which use and sense oxygen availability. Such enzymes are important in plants in responding to flooding, and in humans in responding to low oxygen conditions experienced in cancer or cardiovascular disease. By understanding the molecular details of how these enzymes work, we can figure out ways to manipulate their activity. This could result in designing drugs to treat anaemia or in making plants more flood tolerant.
