Emma has a Ph.D. in cultural geography.

She is the author of the book Filtered: Coffee, the Cafe and the 21st-century city (Routledge 2019). Its themes are urban development & growth, global cafe culture and new forms of urban sociability.

She is co-author & editor of the book Design and Ethics: reflections on practice. (Routledge 2012)

Emma has published many articles & book chapters on aspects of urban culture, creative cities, gender and the city.

She has given invited lectures and media interviews on the cafe's relationship to 21st-century urbanism.
