Finnian M.M. Gerety

Visiting Assistant Professor, Religious Studies, Brown University

Finnian M.M. Gerety works on South Asian Religions with a focus on Hindu traditions of India. At once a textual scholar, filmmaker, and sensory ethnographer, he is particularly interested in the interaction of texts and the embodied experience of ritual, performance, and the senses. His dissertation, "This Whole World of OM: Song, Soteriology, and the Emergence of the Sacred Syllable," shows how the preeminent Sanskrit mantra "OM" emerged from the liturgical song tradition (sāmaveda) of Vedic ritual.
