Frank A. Scannapieco SUNY Distinguished Professor of Oral Biology, is a periodontist and microbiologist with 40 years of research experience. He received the DMD from the University of Connecticut, and the Ph.D. in Oral Biology and Certificate in Periodontology from the University at Buffalo.
He has studied oral microbiology, molecular mechanisms of bacterial colonization and the interface between oral and systemic health. He was amongst the first to define connections between poor oral health and respiratory infection in intensive care and nursing home patients. His work has contributed to the now widespread recognition for the need of oral care in the hospital and nursing home settings.
