My work of the past years has focussed on the intersection of the humanities and Cognitive Science. My most recent book is The Dark Sides of Empathy (Cornell University Press, 2019). While I am not against empathy, but in fact for it, I suggest that not only can empathy misguide people but can also directly motivate acts of cruelty, terrorism, and humiliation. Even even well-meaning compassion has many unintended consequences. My current project is a book on the Narrative Brain. I direct the Experimental Humanities Lab at Indiana University.
