Gautam is currently working at the Universidade Federal de Uberlândia in Brazil as part of the U.S. Fulbright Scholar program.

Prior to this, he conducted biomedical research at the Mayo Clinic, Stanford, and the City of Hope, in cardiovascular medicine and lung biology. He gained clinical experience shadowing physicians at UC San Diego Medical Center, the Christian Medical College in Vellore, India, and the Mayo Clinic, among others. His research interests include reduction of prevalent non-communicable diseases by diet, exercise, and lifestyle modification.

Gautam has published one peer-reviewed article on integrative medicine in pediatrics, and has presented his research at 7 local and national meetings, including an award-winning oral presentation at St. Jude's National Symposium for Undergraduate Research in Memphis, TN. Gautam has received awards for his research from the Samuel Lawrence Foundation, the Frontiers of Innovation Scholars Program, and the National Science Foundation Innovation Corps.

In his free time, Gautam enjoys cycling, hiking, and playing a host of musical instruments. He is an Eagle Scout and a long-active member of the UC San Diego Ultimate Frisbee Team.
