Dr Gavin Melles joined Swinburne university in mid-2006 from Melbourne University. He is currently senior lecturer in design and researcher affiliated with the Centre for Design Innovation, the Centre for Urban Transitions, and the CRC for Low Carbon Living

Dr Melles is an Associate Editor of Arts & Humanities in Higher Education (Sage) and the HETL Review. He serves on the editorial boards of several journals, including the International Journal of Design Creativity and Journal of Applied Research in Higher Education. His recent work can be seen in these journals and others in education and design. He has given keynotes, seminars and guest lectures recently at Manchester University, TU Delft, TU München, RWTH Aachen , TU Dresden, and other institutions.

He is currently coordinating and associate supervisor of PhD students in faculties of engineering and design. He has five completed research supervisions as principal or associate at Masters and PhD, including in Germany (TU Dresden). He teaches research methods at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the faculty. Dr Melles was a project member and co-author of the two year EU-ICP (2010-2012) grant on design knowledge exchange (0.935 million) funding staff and student exchange between seven institutions. He has recently received short research fellowship grants as visiting professor from the German Government (Deutsche Akademische Austausch Dienst, 2010), the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF, 2011), and from the Exploratory Research Space at RWTH Aachen, HCI Research Center (2012). Dr Melles is an external assessor for the SNF and assessor for the ARC. He holds a one year (2012-2013) Swedish Higher Education Research Collaboration Grant (STINT) with Associate Professor Stefan Holmild, Linköping university, focussed on Service / Interaction Design.
