I am Senior Lecturer in the History of Education at UCL Institute of Education. I am a historian of voluntary action, education and youth in modern Britain, currently working on an ESRC-funded project examining changing ideas about the balance in the provision of welfare between voluntary organisations and the state in the 1940s and 2010s. I am also completing a co-authored book on the history of humanitarianism as well as the revised official history of UCL, The World of UCL. My previous book, A Social History of Student Volunteering: Britain and Beyond, 1880-1980 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014), takes a long view of the experience of going to university in Britain and the campaigning, activism and volunteering of generations of students. I am also Director of a British Academy Research Project (ARP) on voluntary sector archives ‘Digitising the Mixed Economy of Welfare in Britain‘ (2014-2019). I teach history across UCL.
