Associate Professor Gottfried Lechner is the Director of the Institute for Telecommunications Research where he leads a team of academic researchers, engineers and postgraduate students. The institute is an internationally recognised research group specialised in research and technology development for wireless communications, especially satellite communications and free space optical communications, and operates a satellite ground station and a free space optical test range. Since 2019, he is also Program Director of "Advanced Communications, Connectivity and IoT" in the SmartSat Cooperative Research Centre.
A/Prof Lechner completed his Dipl.-Ing. and Dr.techn. degrees from Vienna University of Technology, Austria, in 2003 and 2007, respectively. He worked as a software developer from 1999 to 2002 before joining the Telecommunications Research Centre Vienna in 2002 as a Researcher in the area of Signal and Information Processing. In this role he collaborated extensively with numerous European research organisations and industry partners. In 2008 he joined the University of South Australia as a Research Fellow in the area of broadband wireless communications.
A/Prof Lechner has published more than 70 research journal articles, conference papers and technical reports. He serves as a reviewer for a number of top academic journals in the area of telecommunications, a reviewer for the Australian Research Council and a technical program committee member for a number of international conferences. He is a member of the IEEE, the IEEE Information Theory Society and the IEEE Communications Society.
