Emeritus Professor of Social Work, University of British Columbia

MA (Cambridge, 1964), Diploma in Social Administration (LSE, 1965). Practised community development for a number of years in South East Asia, London and Liverpool followed by academic social work appointments teaching social policy in Hong Kong, Australia and in Canada since the mid 1970s - University of Regina, UNBC and as director of the UBC School of Social Work (1998-2008).

My research has focused on poverty, food insecurity, food charity and the right to food in Canada and the Global North. Publications have included 'Food Banks and the Welfare Crisis' (CCSD, 1986); 'First World Hunger. Food Security and Welfare Politics' (ed, Macmillan 1997); 'Canada: Right to Food Case Study' (UN FAO, 2004); 'First World Hunger Revisited. Food Charity and the Right to Food' (ed, Palgrave Macmillan 2014); 'Food Bank Nations. Poverty, Corporate Charity and the Right to Food' (Routledge, 2018).
