I graduated from the University of Bonn in Germany with the Degree of Diplom Ingenieur which is considered equivalent to an MSc by the HSRC and joined the University of Cape Town as a lecturer , graduated with a PhD in Photogrammetry and advanced to Full Professor. I was Head of UCT's Geomatics Department for 17 years. I am a Fellow of the University of Cape Town, a Fellow of ISPRS (the International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing) , a Fellow of the South African Academy of Engineers, a Member of the South African Academy of Science and an Honorary Member of SAGI. I am past Council member of ISPRS, past Chair of the Financial Commission of ISPRS and former Vice President of (AARSE) the African Association for Remote Sensing of Environment. Currently I head the Zamani Heritage Documentation Research Group at UCT
