Hilary Lappin-Scott

Senior Pro Vice-Chancellor, Swansea University

Professor Hilary Lappin-Scott is the Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor responsible for Research and Innovation and Strategic Development at Swansea University.

Professor Lappin-Scott is Vice President of the Federation of European Microbiology Society (FEMS)and a Trustee of the Daphne Jackson Trust. She is former President of the Microbiology Society and the International Society for Microbial Ecology (ISME). Hilary is also Swansea University’s lead for the Equality and Diversity agenda for Athena SWAN and an elected Board member of the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU).

Her recent work on promoting girls in Science and retaining women in STEM careers include her TedTalk and she advises Australian Universities and Research institutes on best practice on supporting women in STEM and is co-author of “Talented Women for a Successful Wales” Professor Lappin-Scott is also an advisor to the Canadian Science Minister and in November 2016 was awarded the prestigious WISE HERO award WISE Hero Award 2016.

Professor Lappin-Scott has a well-established record of research on unravelling the complexities within microbial biofilm communities, which has resulted in the publication of more than 200 scientific papers in Microbial Ecology.
