Since the beginning of my scientific career at the CSIC I have been involved in the study of ultrasounds for particle and cell manipulation in aerosols, suspensions, tissues and tumors, including development of new technological approaches at macroscale and microfluidic scales. I participated in the European Network EURO-Ultra-SONO-Sep, with a postdoc position contracted by the Technical University of Viena after my PhD dissertation. I joined the scientific staff of the Spanish National Research Council CSIC in June 2003 as tenured scientist. Since then I have opened new research lines for the development of lab-on-chip technologies for environmental and biomedical applications (sorting and isolation of micrón-sized pparticles and rare cells ). I created a research group RESULT of Ultrasonic Resonators for Manipulation in ITEFI-CSIC. We were pioneers with our polymeric resonating sorters with feasible applications to biomedicine (liquid biopsy) and currently we are developing novel ultrasonic actuators for early diagnosis and modulation of tumors and stroma in cancer progression. In particular, to inhibit cancer cell migration and proliferation. Since 2009 I coordinate multidisciplinar teams involving biologists, oncologists, engineers and physicists with synergic transdisciplinar interests and approaches. I have led four international collaborations with the University of Manchester (UMI), with the Laboratory L. Steele of the Harvard Medical School- since 2016 up to date, with Universidad Nacional de Colombia since 2017 and Universidad Uruguay sin 2018. I have participated in the organization of international conferences and belong the scientific committees of:1)GMEPE-PAHCE (Vicepresident of the Conference in 2016); 2) Scientific Committee in Acoustofluidics since 2012. I have been member of 2 international juries to evaluate Doctoral Theses: University of Southampton (2015) and- University Pierre et Marie Curie EPSCII of París (2014) I evaluate research proposals in the external panel of evaluators of NASA since 2016 and diverse papers submitted to SCI journals. I am serving as guest editor for special Issues in Micromachines and Sensors Journals. Currently I lead a research involving low intensity ultrasounds to perform non-invasive manipulation of tissue and cultured cells in cancer processes (RETOS DPI2017-90147-R) in collaboration with the Hospital Ramon y Cajal of Madrid and foreign Research Institutions with development of lab-on-chip platforms to study: - cell biodynamics in 2D migration processes and - induce stable cell aggregates and we are studying shear wave velocities in anisotropic media mimicking tissues Currently I am Vicedirector for scientific affairs of the Institute of Physical Technologies and Information ITEFI of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas de España, CSIC, since july 2018
