Ignatius Michael Viljoen

PhD Candidate Cell and Gene Therapy Regulation. Institute for Cellular and Molecular Medicine,, University of Pretoria

Ignatius Michael Viljoen is a pharmacist with more than 30 years’ experience in the research-based and generic pharmaceutical industries. He has worked on product development and commercial projects on five continents to bring medicines to people. He is a certified quality professional under the Chartered Quality Institute (CQI) and is on the International Register of Certificated Auditors (IRCA). He has consulted on various aspects of GxP.
He believes that treatments and cures for many of the diseases that burden African populations, will have to be found on the continent and that advanced therapies hold great promise to deliver these treatments and cures. This can only be achieved in a regulatory framework that enables local research in, and development and manufacturing of quality, safe, effective, and affordable advanced therapies in Africa and that prevents the exploitation of vulnerable people. His current focus is to develop a comprehensive guideline that can inform such a regulatory framework. This work is done in association with the Institute for Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of Pretoria, South Africa.
