Dr. J. Andrew Deman is a full-time Lecturer in the English Department at the University of Waterloo - St. Jerome's campus. His research on representation in comics is published in Critical Survey of Graphic Novels, American Visual Memoir after the 1970s, English Studies Forum, TRANSverse, Canadian Graphic Life Narratives, The Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics, Supersex, and in his books "The Margins of Comics," and "The Claremont Run: Subverting Gender in the X-Men," winner of the 2024 Eisner Award for best scholarly publication. Andrew also served as a featured expert for the ten part comics documentary series INK: Alter Egos Exposed, and as the President of the Canadian Society for the Study of Comics (CSSC). Andrew co-hosts the comics literature podcast "Oh Gosh, Oh Golly, Oh Wow" and is the project lead for "The Claremont Run," a SSHRC-sponsored academic initiative devoted to advancing the study of Chris Claremont's work on X-men comics from 1975-1991.Andrew is also the co-project lead for "Sequential Scholars" a public-facing social media microblogging project on the subject of graphic narrative.
