James L. Flexner

I have a BA in Anthropology and Archaeology with honours from the University of Virginia (2005), and an MA (2006) and PhD (2010) in Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley. My PhD research was based on a landscape analysis of the 19th century leprosy settlement on Molokai Island, Hawai'i. Since 2011 I have been doing archaeological fieldwork in the southern part of Vanuatu, looking into the 3000-year history of the region's five islands, including a particular focus on 19th century missionary incursions. I also have active research on a 19th century rural hotel site in coastal Tasmania, and a collaboration with Australian South Sea Islander groups researching the history and heritage of sugarcane planting in tropical Queensland.
