Jane Lavery is a lecturer in Hispanic Studies at the University of Southampton. She is a Mexican Cultural Studies expert and has published several monographs and peer-reviewed, in the area, and has been interviewed on Mexican and UK T.V outlets about her expertise. She is currently conducting a large-scale research project examining the Mexican Day of the Dead as celebrated in the diaspora in the UK and Ireland, and the impact of Covid-19 on this practice, and death practices as a whole. The project stems from her publication on the reception of the Mexican practice in the UK and questions of cultural (mis)appropriation ( https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/24741604.2021.1890432), which has formed the basis of a forthcoming co-authored monograph examining the impact of Covid-19 on the Day of the Dead in Mexico, Ireland and the UK.
The research has a related public-engagement dimension in the form of a documentary, arts-engagement workshops, multimedia exhibitions; and, in collaboration with the Mexican Embassy, UK secondary school curriculum enrichment across the nine regions of England. Lavery was interviewed by the BBC about the Mexican Day of Dead as celebrated by Bournemouth’s Mexican community, with whom Lavery is collaborating for her research project.
