Jens Christian Moesgaard

Professor of Numismatics, Stockholm University

As a curator at the county Museum of Rouen in Normandy and later at the National Museum of Denmark, I have processed many Viking Age coin finds. I have published numerous articles on coins and currency in North Western Europa during the Viking Period and the Middle Ages. In 2015, I published a book on the Cross coins of the Danish Viking king Harold Bluetooth, and I am currently preparing a book on the Viking coinage of Normandy.

My research is concentrating on coin production and coin use. My aim is to use the huge potential of coins as source material for history by putting coins into their political, economic, social and cultural setting. I have taken a particular interest in the archaeological context of coin finds, tempting to develop methods to interpret it in order to gain a better understanding of former coin use.

I started at Stockholm University 1 November 2019 as research assistant, since 1 February 2020 as Professor. My chair is fully financed by Gunnar Ekströms Stiftelse för Numismatik https://gunnarekstromsstiftelse.se/
