Jonathan Himmelfarb is the Joseph W. Eschbach endowed chair in kidney research, director of the Kidney Research Institute, professor of medicine at the University of Washington, and the president-elect of the American Society of Nephrology.
Dr. Himmelfarb's research interests involve metabolic complications of kidney disease including CKD, ESRD and AKI. In particular, he has focused on understanding how the loss of kidney function contributes to increased oxidative stress, inflammation, insulin resistance and endothelial dysfunction, and ultimately cardiovascular risk in kidney disease. Dr. Himmelfarb has also been involved in creating statewide, community-based research into healthcare disparities related to chronic kidney disease. He evaluates novel approaches to renal replacement therapies.
