Julio de Carvalho Ponce

Lecturer in Forensic Science, University of Winchester

Julio joined the University of Winchester in 2022 as a Lecturer in Forensic Science.

Julio obtained his BSc in Molecular Sciences from the University of Sao Paulo (USP), Brazil in 2005, during which he had an internship at the Coroner's Office of the Medico-Legal Institute of the State of Sao Paulo.
Soon after, in 2008, he joined the Scientific Police of the State of Sao Paulo in an official capacity, working as a Crime Scene Specialist at the Crimes Against Life Unit, Forensic Toxicology Laboratory, Regional Traffic and Volume Crimes Unit, DNA Laboratory and Seized Drugs Analysis Laboratory, which he directed between 2019 and 2022.

Julio also has a MSc in Experimental Physiopathology, completed in 2010 with the thesis "Alcohol-related fatal traffic accidents in the city of Sao Paulo, 2005" and BSc in Pharmacy-Biochemistry from USP, completed in 2013.

He has also completed a PhD at USP in 2020, with a six-month internship at Oslo Universitet sykehus in Norway from which three articles - analysing traffic laws in Brazil, comparing data between Brazil and Norway and evaluating breathalyser data in Sao Paulo - were written and published in peer-review journals.

Julio has dedicated his research on alcohol, drugs and violent deaths, on developing methods for the detection of harmful substances and on the detection and molecular characterization of New Psychoactive Substances.
