Karl has worked for several years in academic institutions in Germany, UK, France and South Africa and also for several years in South African Biotechnology industry.

He has over 30 years of research and development experience in both academic and industrial working environments. Besides his strong interest in teaching bio-entrepreneurship, his specific research interest is in applying advanced agricultural biotechnology methods to provide crops tailored to market demands with better defenses against abiotic stresses and also to evaluate plants as ‘bio-factories’ for foreign protein production. Central to his research interest is revealing a greater understanding of the particular function of the protease-protease inhibitor system in these processes.
