Lecturer in Deafness, Cognition and Language, UCL

Dr Kate Rowley is a deaf researcher, specialising in language and literacy development of deaf children. She is interested in promoting bilingualism and multilingualism in deaf children and adults. She is currently working as a lecturer in the Deafness, Cognition and Language (DCAL) research centre, University College London (UCL). She also regularly delivers workshops on deaf children's language, literacy and cognitive development under her freelance business, Language Wise.

Kate grew up in a deaf family in Cornwall and has two children, one of whom is also deaf. She went to a deaf boarding school from aged 11 to 18 and read Deaf Studies at the University of Bristol for her BSc degree. She then went to UCL to complete an MA in Linguistics and a PhD in Experimental Psychology (completed 2018). Currently she is working on a project that explores British Sign Language (BSL) and English literacy skills in deaf children between the ages of 4 and 18.
