Keshia Pollack Porter

Professor of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University

I use injury epidemiology, health impact assessment, and mixed methods to advance policies that create safe and healthy environments where people live, work, play, and travel. I focus on identifying policy solutions to prevent injuries related to work, obesity, sports and recreation, physical activity, transportation, and the built environment, address social determinants of health, reduce disparities, and advance health equity. As part of my expertise in safety and the built environment, I am leading the national Physical Activity Policy Research Network Plus, which advances policy research to increase the number of Americans who achieve adequate physical activity to promote and sustain health. I also focus on optimizing the use of health impact assessment (HIA) and related approaches to advance health in all policies (HiAP). I spend a considerable amount of time directly engaging with policymakers to promote evidence-informed policy decisions and advance HiAP at the local, state, and federal levels.
