PhD Candidate in Social Media Law, Edge Hill University

Laura graduated from Edge Hill in 2013 with a degree in law (LLB) and completed an LLM by Research in 2016. Laura’s research interests include: media law, particularly the law and social media; feminist research and aspects of public law. These interests are reflected in Laura’s PhD which examines the law’s response to online abuse, particularly abuse directed at women.

Laura's PhD examines how the current criminal law framework in the United Kingdom fails to adequately protect individuals from online abuse. Her main focus, is on the way in which women, particularly women in the public domain, are targeted on social media. To do this, in depth interviews are being conducted with campaigners and politically active women, who have been subjected to abuse online.

It is hoped that by critically examining the law’s response to online behaviour and how women are treated on the internet, suggestions can be put forward as to how we can better protect individuals from online abuse.
