Dr. Brunner is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Centre for Migration Studies at the University of British Columbia, located on xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) territory. She conducts interdisciplinary research on international migration and education. Her current postdoctoral work examines narratives of Canadian citizenship and immigrant naturalization.
Dr. Brunner's PhD dissertation focused on the recruitment and retention of international students as economic immigrants, i.e., through 'edugration,' examining the shifting roles of Canadian higher education institutions in relation to settler colonialism, surveillance, and border imperialism. Her MA thesis probed the experiences of refugees resettled from Aceh, Indonesia to Metro Vancouver five years after their arrival.
Dr. Brunner has been a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant in good standing since 2014. She has over a decade of professional experience as a university international student advisor. She has completed research, education, and public policy projects with the newcomer settlement sector in Canada and the United States.
