Professor of Biology, Queen's University, Ontario

Lonnie Aarssen is a Professor of Biology at Queen's University, where his teaching, writing and research focus is on ecology and evolution. He has published more than 180 articles in scientific journals, and is founder and editor of the open access journal, Ideas in Ecology and Evolution. In recent projects, Lonnie explores how evolutionary thinking can affect our understanding of our lives, our species and our ability to share the planet with other species. This theme is showcased in his popular Queen’s course, Evolution and Human Affairs, where annually more than 600 students apply Darwinian evolutionary theory to the interpretation of contemporary human motivations and cultures, and how these features impact on civilization, and the challenges it faces for the 21st century.
