Epidemiologist, University of Washington

Dr. Maayan Simckes is an Epidemiologist at the Washington State Department of Health where she works on a range of projects in the Office of Science, Health, and Informatics. Her interests include advancing equity, inclusion, and social justice in the application of epidemiologic methods. Dr. Simckes completed her PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Washington. Her doctoral work examined the intersection of policing and population health with an emphasis on militarization and deaths caused by law enforcement. Prior to pursuing her PhD, Maayan served as a CSTE Applied Epidemiology Fellow with Multnomah County Health Department in Portland, Oregon, where she specialized in both communicable disease and substance abuse epidemiology. She received her Masters in Public Health in Epidemiology from the Saint Louis University College for Public Health and Social Justice and her BA in community health and psychology from Tufts University.
