My main areas of interest lay in twentieth-century British politics. To date, I have concentrated mainly on the interwar years, with a particular interest in the British labour movement. I have also written on communism in Britain and in Europe, while my research into Sir Oswald Mosley's New Party led me to work on the far right of the British political spectrum. My current interest is directed towards the link between politics and youth culture in the late 1970s and early 1980s. This, I hope, will lead to book entitled Anarchy in the UK: Politics, Punk and Society, 1976-84. I am a part of the steering committee for the Interdisciplinary Network for the Study of Subculture, Popular Music and Social Change.
