Professor Yau has extensive clinical experience in psychiatry and mental health, particularly in the areas of long-term mental illness, stress management and autism. His doctoral study was on the topic of mental illness and Chinese families in Hong Kong at the time of transition of sovereignty. He also received training in clinical hypnotherapy and sex therapy.

Matthew is lecturing on occupational therapy theories, community mental health, sexuality and disability, sexual health, communication and counselling, and qualitative research methods across the undergraduate and graduate programs.
