Merryn Hutchings

Emeritus Professor, Institute for Policy Studies in Education, London Metropolitan University

Merryn Hutchings is an Emeritus Professor at London Metropolitan University. She started her career teaching in London primary schools. She then worked in teacher training, and for the last twelve years was Deputy Director and then Director of the Institute for Policy Studies in Education at London Metropolitan University.

The main focus of her research has been teachers. She was involved in research about teacher supply in London in the lead-up to the 2001-2 teacher shortage, and subsequently conducted research for the DfES, Scottish Executive and GTC about supply teachers, and led an evaluation of the Teach First programme for the TDA. More recently, she has undertaken research for the DCSF about various policies designed to raise standards in school, including the Excellent Teacher scheme and workforce remodelling in schools. Her most recent project was a DfE-funded evaluation of the City Challenge programme in London, Greater Manchester and the Black Country.
