Michael Harris is Senior Fellow in the School of Economics at the University of Sydney. Previously, he was the Chief Economist of the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences in the commonwealth Department of Agriculture. During his academic career, he has taught at the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment at the University of Sydney, as well as at the University of Melbourne (where he completed his PhD) and La Trobe University.
He was researched and consulted in a variety of areas including natural resource accounting, sustainability measurement, soil carbon sequestration, agricultural R&D, water management, and the economic analysis of ecological resilience. He has consulted for a number of government agencies and industry organisations.
He has been an Associate Editor for the Australian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics, and on the editorial boards of the journals Environment and Development Economics, and the Sustainability, Accounting, Management and Policy Journal.
