Bio: MJ (Thinus) Booysen is Associate Professor at the Electrical & Electronic Engineering Department at Stellenbosch University. He has been with Stellenbosch University from 2009 and his research is on the Internet of Things, with a focus on Smart Energy, Water and Vehicles (specifically its application to paratransit in Sub-Saharan Africa). He is also a founder of Bridgiot (Bridge-to-the-Internet-of-Things), and co-creator of Geasy and Count Dropula. He is the Director of the MTN Mobile Intelligence Lab and co-founder of the Stellenbosch Smart Mobility Lab. He is a Member of the Institution of Engineering Technology (MIET), a Chartered Engineer (CEng) at the Engineering Council (UK), and a Professional Engineer (PrEng) with the Engineering Council (SA). He has over ten years’ international industry experience in the aerospace and automotive industries with companies that include SunSpace, Rolls-Royce, Boeing, BMW, and Jaguar Land Rover.

What I have achieved is due to a combination of collaboration with gifted colleagues and students, generous contributions from industry and parastatal institutions, Grace, good fortune, support and advice from seasoned academics and editors, and fear-driven hard work and sacrifice. I honestly cannot take credit for any good in this. Special mention must go to Di Kilpert, who re-sculpts much of my cack-handed writing.

My name is Thinus (or MJ), not Professor.

Pronunciation: TEA-nis, like Venus with a T, the h is only decorative.
