My first book, Storytelling in Opera and Musical Theater (Indiana University Press, 2020), explores how operas and musicals tell stories in comparison with other media. Through discussions of recent opera productions in Canada, I also reflect on how centuries-old works remain meaningful to contemporary audiences and have the power to attract new, more diverse audiences to opera and musical theatre.

My next project explores new models of authorship and collaboration in contemporary opera and musical theatre in Canada. The first stage of this work involves a survey and interviews of Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour who work is opera in Canada. The next stage focuses specifically on documenting how Indigenous-led operas that are being created right now are exploring new ways of working together.
