Peter A. Newman is a Professor at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto. He was Canada Research Chair in Health and Social Justice from 2007–2018 and is an Inaugural Fellow of the Society for Social Work and Research. Dr. Newman is also an affiliate of the Joint Centre for Bioethics and standing member of the UofT Health Sciences Research Ethics Board.
As an expert on HIV prevention, vaccine acceptability, and social determinants of health among marginalized populations, his work has been widely disseminated across Canada and globally. He has written more than 165 refereed publications and has been recognized as among the most highly cited scholars in his discipline in North America. He currently leads research projects in Canada, India, Bangladesh, and Thailand, funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and the International Development Research Centre, including #SafeHandsSafeHearts, an eHealth intervention to support racialized and LGBTQ+ communities in the COVID-19 pandemic, and Project VOICES—Vaccine Outreach Integrating Community Engagement and Science.
