Professor Richard Haines has an MA in from University of Natal, and a PhD from the University of London. He is also Professor of Development Studies in the School of Economics, Tourism and Development at Nelson Mandela University where he created the Department of Development Studies, which he ran from 2006-2015. He was also Director of the Unit for Economic Development and Tourism at Nelson Mandela University from 2011 to 2015.

Previously he was Head of the Department of Sociology at the former University of Port Elizabeth (the now Nelson Mandela University); and prior to this he was Associate Professor in Sociology and Industrial Sociology, and Dean of Social Sciences at Rhodes University. Among his awards is the Victoria League Scholarship for advanced graduate study.

Professor Haines’ fields of research expertise include industrial and economic policy; human capital; the institutional dynamics of the creative economy; cultural policy and development; development theory; development history; outsourcing; and the defence and aerospace industries.
