I am a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology at the University of Southampton, and have an expertise in the use of Mass Observation data. I have recently co-authored a book 'Continuity and Change in Voluntary Action' which is being published by Policy Press in May 2018. This draws on a piece of mixed-methods research using survey data alongside Mass Observation writing between 1981 and 2012, to examine contemporary British volunteering.
I am currently working on the Discourse of Voluntary Action Project, leading the analysis of ‘public discourses’, which draws on Mass Observation material from two time-points, the 1940s and 2010. This will include a consideration of public reactions to the Beveridge Report in December 1942.
