SF McLaren lectured in writing and literary studies for over twenty years, at University of Wollongong, Macquarie University and Western Sydney University, and has written three textbooks on academic writing.

After undergraduate study in the BA Communications at the University of Technology Sydney he travelled extensively, played bass in musicals at Sydney’s New Theatre, and formed a band in the Sydney underground scene of the 1980s. He has been a contributory writer to satirical shows on Australian TV.

In his Masters in English at the University of Sydney, and in subsequent doctoral research, he specialised in the compositional history of James Joyce’s works. He has presented talks at Bloomsday events in Sydney and in Melbourne, and has published papers on Joyce.

Presently he is writing a fiction “murmoir” and is a casual teacher of writing and literacy at Western Sydney University.
