Simani Gaseitsiwe

Simani Gaseitsiwe is a Principal Investigator and Research Associate at Botswana Harvard AIDS Institute Partnership(BHP) and a Research Associate with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He holds a BSc (Medical Technology) from University of Pittsburgh, USA and a PhD in Medical Sciences from Karolinska Institute, Sweden. He has broad interest in infectious disease research spanning HIV, TB, and HBV. His current research focuses on characterizing drug resistance mutations in HIV-1 subtype C infected patients on different antiretroviral regimens in Botswana. He also has an ongoing project on Hepatitis B virus infection in Botswana which seeks to explore the circulating HBV genotypes in Botswana and their impact on response to HIV antiretroviral therapy. On the TB front, Gaseitsiwe has ongoing work exploring latent TB infection in Botswana and predictors for development of active TB in patients on antiretroviral therapy. He has collaborations with various academic institutions allowing him to supervise and co-supervise graduate students at University of Botswana (UB), Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST), and University of Kwazulu-Natal (UKZN). Most of these students do the research work at the BHP laboratory under his supervision.
