Sjors Joosten

I am a PhD Student at the Department of Sociology, Stockholm University. In my PhD project I look at the role of hip-hop in Swedish society and Stockholm, and its relation to sense of belonging, inclusion and recognition in society, structural inequalities, and the notion of 'Swedishness'. The focus is on the 'ortenrap' (suburb rap) genre from Stockholm. Through ethngraphic fieldwork with stakeholders of the Stockholm hip-hop scene, such as artists, producers, journalist, organizations, etc. and using second-hand data I hope to create a better understanding of the music-culture that has taken over Sweden in the twenty-first century and which role it plays in Swedish society.
