My research focus has been on the public sphere, violence, and voluntary organizing in the nineteenth-century British North America-United States borderland. Specifically, I examine the relationship between violence, voluntary associations, and the press using as the newspapers, secret societies, and political associations that emerged around the 1837-8 Rebellion in Lower and Upper Canada and the subsequent border troubles.
