Group Leader, Economics and Future Pathways, CSIRO

Dr Whitten is an environmental and institutional economist with CSIRO. He has worked on the design and delivery of a wide range of markets for ecosystem services including the metric of the Australian Government’s Environmental Stewardship Program, design options for the Reef Trust Tender – Wet Tropics, pilot implementation of a conservation tender paying for outputs, and Inputs to the National Wildlife Corridor Plan for Australia. His current research focus is on understanding institutions and policy needs to support landscape scale biodiversity and on land management and Great Barrier Reef water quality. He has coordinated two major symposia: ‘New Horizons in Market Based Instruments’ and ‘Market-based Tools for Environmental Management’; and published widely in a variety of forums.
