PhD Candidate, Deakin University

Tezcan Gumus is a PhD candidate at Deakin University. His doctoral thesis examines the role and culture of political leadership in Turkey and the impact this has had on the nature of democracy in the country. Fluent in Turkish, he spent 2016 in Turkey conducting research which included interviews with prominent actors as part of his fieldwork.

His work and research interests draw inspiration from democratic theory, contemporary politics of democratisation, politics in Turkey and the Middle East, and matters concerning social justice. His qualifications include a Master of International Relations and BA Honours (International Studies and Political Science) from the University of Melbourne. Tezcan also continues to teach university courses ranging from Middle Eastern Politics, International Human Rights Law, Democratic Theory and Global Politics.
