Tim is the incoming Director of the Transport Studies Unit (TSU), a research institute within the School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford. He joined the TSU as a senior researcher in 2009 and has been appointed jointly by TSU and the School of Geography since November 2012. Previously he worked as a lecturer in urban geography at Utrecht University, the Netherlands where he also completed his PhD dissertation (2003) and a MSc programme in urban geography (1999).

Tim is one of the Co-Directors of the RCUK funded Research Centre on Innovation and Energy Demand (www.cied.ac.uk) in which the University of Sussex collaborates with the Universities of Manchester and Oxford.

Tim's research is firmly rooted in geography yet interdisciplinary in scope. It is theoretically oriented and empirical in nature, and international in outlook. He sees questions of transport and mobility as central to contemporary society and challenges around climate change, development and urbanisation. His key research interests include everyday mobility in cities; transition to low-carbon and low-energy living, mobility systems and societies; and the geographies of ageing, wellbeing and social inequalities. He is the current editor-in-chief of Journal of Transport Geography.
