Val Nolan

Lecturer in English and Creative Writing, Aberystwyth University

I am the author of Neil Jordan: Works for the Page (Cork University Press, 2022) and co-author of Spec Fic for Newbies: A Beginner's Guide to Writing Subgenres of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror (Luna Press, 2023).

I teach in the Department of English and Creative Writing at Aberystwyth University where I deliver lectures, seminars, and writing workshops to all undergraduate years, as well as supervising postgraduate creative practice students. Courses taught included 'Reading and Writing Science Fiction', 'Writing Fantasy', 'Kapow! Reading and Writing Graphic Narratives', 'To Boldly Go: Reading Star Trek', and contributions to the design and delivery of team-taught modules such as 'Creative Practice' and the long-form final-year Writing Project.

I have published academic articles in journals such as Science Fiction Studies, Irish Studies Review, Irish University Review, Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics, Review of Contemporary Fiction, and ARIEL: A Review of International English Literature. I have published book chapters on TV shows such as Fringe, Stargate, various incarnations of star Trek, Lost, and Battlestar Galactica, and have written for newspapers such as the Irish Times and the Irish Examiner. My own fiction has appeared in publications such as Interzone, Electric Velocipede, Opulent Syntax, Cosmos, the ‘Futures’ page of Nature, Best of British Science Fiction, and The Year’s Best Science Fiction.
